FAQ
Q1: What is the main difference between a cutting disc and a grinding disc?
A: The primary difference lies in their angle of operation and purpose.
Cutting Discs (typically thin, 1mm-3mm) are designed for a 90-degree angle to the material to make clean, precise cuts and separate material.
Grinding Discs (thicker, 6mm+) are used for a 5 to 15-degree angle for removing material, smoothing welds, beveling edges, and cleaning surfaces. Using a cutting disc for grinding can cause it to shatter due to side pressure.
Q2: How do I choose the right cutting disc for my material?
A: Selecting the correct disc is crucial for safety and performance. Here is a quick guide:
For Mild Steel & Carbon Steel: Use an Aluminum Oxide (brown) disc. It offers a good balance of cutting speed and life.
For Stainless Steel: Use a Zirconia Alumina (special blue or green) disc. It is harder and more heat-resistant, preventing “contamination” of stainless steel and ensuring a cleaner cut.
For Stone, Concrete, & Masonry: Use a Diamond (segment-rim) disc. Ensure it is a “segmented” rim for dry cutting or a “continuous” rim for wet cutting to manage heat and dust.
For Aluminum & Non-Ferrous Metals: Use a dedicated disc for non-ferrous metals, often with a special formulation to prevent loading (clogging) from the soft metal.
Q3: What safety precautions are most important when using a cutting disc?
A:
PPE First: Always wear safety glasses, a face shield, gloves, and hearing protection.
Check the Disc: Before use, perform a “ring test” by tapping the disc lightly with a non-metallic object. It should produce a clear, ringing sound. A dull thud indicates a cracked disc—DO NOT USE IT.
Guard in Place: Ensure the machine’s safety guard is correctly positioned to protect you from sparks and debris.
Secure Workpiece: Clamp down the material you are cutting.
No Lateral Pressure: Apply force straight into the cut. Never bend or twist the disc sideways.
Q4: Why did my cutting disc wear out or break so quickly?
A: Rapid wear or breakage can be caused by:
Incorrect Disc for the Material: Using a disc for the wrong application (e.g., using a steel disc on concrete).
Excessive Pressure: Let the disc do the work. Forcing it generates excess heat and stress.
Incorrect RPM: Using a disc on a tool with a higher RPM than the disc’s maximum rated speed is extremely dangerous.
Angled Cutting: Applying side pressure can cause the thin disc to crack and shatter.
Poor Storage: Discs stored in damp conditions or improperly stacked can be compromised.
Q5: Can I use the same cutting disc for different materials?
A: It is highly discouraged. Using a disc designed for steel on masonry, for example, will wear out almost instantly and is unsafe. More importantly, using a masonry disc on steel is extremely hazardous, as the high-speed steel shavings can become trapped in the disc’s matrix, causing it to explode. Always use a disc specifically designed for your workpiece material.
Q6: Do you offer custom cutting disc solutions?
A: Yes, absolutely. We specialize in providing flexible product customization. If you have a unique application, specific brand specifications, or require discs with special dimensions or formulations, we can work with you to develop the perfect solution. Contact our technical team to discuss your project’s requirements.
