It is caused by defects in grinding wheel manufacturing and installation. For example, the density of the abrasive wheel is not uniform and the end faces are not parallel. Geometry or concentricity error of inner and outer holes, eccentricity of grinding wheel installation, etc. An unbalanced wheel spins at high speed, creating centrifugal force that forces the wheel off-center. This causes the abrasive wheel to vibrate. The consequences do not only affect the grinding quality. It also accelerates the wear of the grinding wheel spindle bearings. When the centrifugal force exceeds the allowable range of the strength of the grinding wheel, the abrasive wheel will be broken.
A balance test should be performed on both new and first-time dressing wheels, as well as those found to be running unbalanced.
There are two ways to adjust the balance of the abrasive wheel: dynamic balance and static balance.
Resin grinding wheel dynamic balance method. The method relies on sensors mounted on the machine tool. It directly shows the unbalance of the abrasive wheel device during rotation. By adjusting the position and distance of the balance block, the unbalance is controlled to a minimum.
Resin grinding wheel static balance method. Static balance adjustment is performed on the gimbal. Find out the center of gravity of the abrasive wheel by hand, install the balance block, and adjust the position of the balance block. Until the wheel is balanced, the wheel can generally be balanced in eight positions. After adjusting the balance of the grinding wheel, the idling test should be carried out after the protective cover is installed. Idling test time: diameter ≥ 400mm, idling time greater than 5min. The diameter is less than 400mm, and the idle time is more than 2min. During the idling test, the operator should stand in a safe position on the side of the grinding wheel. Do not stand in front of the abrasive wheel or in the tangential direction to prevent accidents.
